A glimpse into our nuclear future?By Allison WallWith the possibility of a nuclear power plant close to Lloydminster, city officials travelled to a Bruce Power plant in Ontario to learn more about the operation. The Saskatchewan government recently issued a release encouraging Bruce Power to continue laying groundwork for a possible facility in northwest Saskatchewan, and with a Bruce Power nuclear facility in the region, a group of six from Lloydminster, along with representatives from North Battleford and Prince Albert, toured a Bruce Power facility in Ontario at the end of October. “We went down there to get information, because we knew there would be a lot of questions,” said Lloydminster Mayor Ken Baker, adding while there is always an argument about its safety, he was extremely impressed with the facility. “If something goes wrong it shuts down within just a couple of seconds,” he said. “There are hundreds of people working in that place, there are checks and balances for radiation and safety issues … we stood 10 feet away from big reactors and the people around (the plant) and that whole area have no concerns with the plant.” If a site in Saskatchewan is chosen, it would need to be near a good water source, such as the North Saskatchewan River, have a post-secondary institution and a strong labour force and infrastructure. This past June, the Saskatchewan government and officials announced the launch of a feasibility study – the Saskatchewan 2020 Initiative – to look at a broad selection of possible sites. |
